The Vampire's Red Pellet
I shake my head softly with a calm smile, “No, Mei. You will remain here where you’re safest. Look after yourself and Upma for me, okay? I promise I’ll come back to you.”
She gnaws her lower lip with tears smearing her face as she shakes her head in defiance. I let out a sigh and embrace her. She responds eagerly, gripping me tightly and not willing to let go. Her sorrow starts to get to me and my tears begin to prickle my eyes.
I mustn’t cry, else my fear will be brought out. I pacify her in an unshaken voice, “I trust you won’t defy my selfish wish, Mei. You’ll stay safe and wait for my return.”
