I had been retired for over fifteen years, but the last few months made me feel like a young pup again. I stopped by my own apartment, showering, and packing a bag for my hunt. While Beta has told my old friend the she-wolf didn’t look like she was being coerced, I had to work under the assumption that she may have left under threat. Being prepared for anything was rule number one of being an assassin. Satisfied that I had all my bases covered, every possible tool I would need that was still light enough to carry, I zipped my duffle and loaded into the car.

“Guess you can see that for yourself.” I remained silent, my expression unreadable. I started toward the door, but Casey shifted, blocking my path. “You know,” he said, voice casual, “I’m actually glad he’s gone.” That made me pause. My eyes narrowed slightly, a silent demand for him to continue. Casey’s lips curled into something that wasn’t quite a smile. “I knew what you were from the beginning. Assassin. A famous one, at that.” He tilted his head, watching me carefully. “I always wanted to warn Gerald, tell him exactly what kind of woman he was dealing with. But I didn’t, because I was afraid.”

I was dodging their blows, but I was in no shape to fight, thanks to this baby. My eyes lit up when one of the assassins was about to kick my tummy. But Hayden grabbed her, breaking her leg. She fell to the ground, whimpering. "Get off the way," he said to me, and within a few seconds, they were all dead except for one. The lady who he broke her leg, and the minute she saw that her colleagues were all dead, she quickly ran away, limping. Hayden turned to Jon, who came out from goddess knows where.

The healer had barely recovered from the crushing weight of the visions… the Luna’s final moments, her cries for Aurelia, Selene bleeding her life away, the screams that haunted the battlefield. Her eyes were still wet, heavy with tears that refused to dry. Her body still trembled as though her very soul had been bruised. Then the vision shifted again. Kaelthorn stood tall in front of the Assassin Leader, a towering figure cloaked in black, his face hidden beneath a shadowed hood. The assassin’s voice was cold, even, and dangerous, as he raised his brow and studied Kaelthorn.

No sound. No hesitation. Moonlight spilled through the window, illuminating the room in pale silver. The figure stepped inside. And closed the door quietly behind them. They approached the bed slowly. Aira slept peacefully, unaware of the danger only a few feet away. The hooded figure pulled a small blade from beneath their cloak. The metal glinted faintly in the moonlight. The assassin raised the blade. Then suddenly. A deep growl filled the room. The hooded figure froze.

“Ali is doing great, but Micah is driving me nuts. He’s like a crazy helicopter father─ always hovering around her. I found him putting foam on the corners of our end tables the other day. He said because he didn’t want Ali bumping into the sharp corners. I told him that she’s only three months old and won't be walking for a while, but he won’t listen.” A genuine chuckle escapes my lips at her perturbed words. “Ah, dear niece, so this is what an average day in the life looks like… waltzing with your kill and staring right into their eyes right before you snuff the light out of it… brilliant!” It was obvious he wanted a reaction out of her, and on a very good day, he would have gotten nothing, but today wasn’t exactly going as planned for the plus-sized assassin. Barbara moved with a speed that would have stunned the girl she used to be. In one fluid motion, she was behind him. She didn't bother shedding the server's jacket; she simply reached beneath it. The cold steel of a ceramic knife was pressed firmly against the pulse point of his neck before he could say another word.

Whatever the situation is, read the room first! “I’m from Jaxon. Here for pick up.” Aiden said simply. Those were the exact words Jaxon told him to say. “Yeah, he told me,” Hood replied as he ran his eyes on Aiden then Amira who had her hands wrapped around herself. Hood looked away from them and nodded at one of the men in the room. He walked into another room and walked out back with the bag. He dropped it on the table in front of Aiden and Amira before taking a few steps back. Hood picked up a table knife in front of him and threw it at the bag.

We locked the dungeon’s door and walked back toward the bedroom, making sure to walk in the shadows as we did, careful not to be seen. We entered the bedroom and I couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief when we did, wrapping my arms around Iris and pulling her in for a hug. The two of us were yet to grieve over who was once the best assassin of her time. She was known for her strength, power, and purity. The idea of her betraying the way she did would have never occurred to my mind had we not lived through it, and seeing that she tried hitting two birds with one stone, and that one of those birds was Iris and I didn’t come as pleasing to me.
