Damien hummed but didn't respond, he just went back to reading.
We fell into silence again, both of us scanning documents that were starting to confuse me.
After another thirty minutes, I threw down the contract I was holding and groaned.
"I swear to God if I read the phrase 'notwithstanding the foregoing' one more time, I'm going to lose my mind," I said, leaning back in my chair.
"Who even talks like this?"
"Lawyers," Damien said without looking up.
"Well, lawyers are psychopaths."
"Most of them, yeah," he agreed, the corner of his mouth twitching, "But they're very well paid psychopaths."
