I wandered aimlessly to the library, hoping I could get hold of something nice to pass the time. Autumn had arrived and the nights were drawing in quicker. The library was deserted as every omega servant would be pressed into service tonight. In keeping with the seasons, the lights were low and dim, replicating the candles of the past and my shadows cast everywhere as I searched the deep mahogany shelves for something to divert my attention.

She might as well start with those. She grabbed a cloth and carefully wiped each book clean before placing them into a cardboard box. As she carried the box downstairs, she happened to run into Julian, who had just rushed back. He glanced at her and asked casually, “Where are you taking those books?” Autumn looked down at the books in her arms and replied offhandedly, “I was cleaning the room and saw these lying around gathering dust. Figured they’re useless now, so I’m tossing them.” Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly.

The grand library glowed with the soft amber light of floating lanterns and a roaring hearth fire that cast long, dancing shadows across towering shelves. Guests had retired for the evening after another lavish solstice supper, but the manor refused to sleep. Enchanted books rustled faintly on their own, pages turning as if reading scandalous secrets aloud. Elara slipped inside after midnight, telling herself she only wanted a quiet moment with a novel to calm her racing mind. In truth, her body burned.

Her guardian angel certainly put forth extra effort for her. Although the anguish intensified, the moisture on her skin that was cooled by the cool air and the blood that covered her turtleneck made her feel even colder. Something approached her. She inhaled the aromas and listened intently to the sound of its scrambling. When she baked apple pies, prepared specialty soups and hot, spicy chili, and decorated with pumpkins, squash, and vibrant mums—colors that complemented her flaming red hair and green eyes—it was a cold, crisp autumn with a touch of wetness in the air. Autumn, her favorite season.

The autumn air grew cold and bitter late that autumn, clinging to the edges of the cottage where Adrian and Elara wrapped themselves in a woollen shawl of warmth. Leaves blew outside, whirling from the bare trunks of trees to the ground like nature's goodbye before winter arrived. Adrian's weathered hand rested against hers, his fingers following the curve of her knuckles as they soaked in a silent by the fire.

And even when they hadn’t… I no longer let them land. I had too much peace in me now. There wasn’t room for shame anymore. Back at the house, I carried the books Darren had ordered for the nursery upstairs and placed them on the newly assembled shelf. They were all hardcovers with soft pastel covers and gold-stamped lettering: Goodnight Moon, The Velveteen Rabbit, Where the Wild Things Are, Dream Big, Little One, I Am Enough. I traced the spine of each book with my fingertip, whispering the titles softly.
