Alpha Asher grunted, holding my bag in his hands. I followed Alpha Asher silently, my paws tapping against the thick pads on the floor. The lights were off inside, all coming on at once as Alpha Asher flipped the switches. Once the door was closed, Alpha Asher turned to me. “Shift.” His voice was rough and commanding. I’m sure Maya would’ve done anything he asked, so long as he used that tone. The fur retreated from my body, my bones shifting back with minimal discomfort. My long raven colored hair hung down to my waist, covering most of my bre*sts as I stood bare in front of Alpha Asher.

She lowered her head slightly, a silent gesture of trust and reassurance. Something in Asher’s chest loosened. He felt his anger dissipating, the tension draining from his muscles. With a shudder, he let his wolf recede, his body twisting and reshaping until he stood on two legs, his human form exposed to the cool night air. Olivia followed his lead, shifting effortlessly into her human form. She stood a few feet away, giving him space, her silver hair catching the moonlight. She didn’t speak immediately, waiting for him to regain his composure.

His jaw is clenched, and he lets out a tortured groan, like an animal caught in a trap. “Help,” I cry, not sure if I need help for me or for Axel or for both of us. Ama stands with muscular arms folded, a victorious smile on her face, like this moment is special for her. Hatred for her boils in my stomach. The shaman keeps shaking the feet, rattling them together like a rattlesnake, until I want to scream, to tear my hands off if that’s the only escape. The temperature dropped instantly. Air thinned. Frost crawled across the runes. My breath fogged. Ashen stiffened but didn’t collapse. I stepped in closer. “Ashen, keep breathing. She plopped down with a huff and began to dig in. Ulrich, being the brute that he was, yanked the leg off the roasted turkey and took a bite. I ignored the way my stomach clenched, filling my throat with the sting of bile. “Jade, Vasu, Rosalind, and Mara are a few.” Amora sighed, “She won Vasu over, truly? What a pity. The God of Serpents is stunning. Mara, on the other hand, isn’t exactly a surprise. She’s always been so full of wrath.”

I didn't know what to make of him. He seemed almost... otherworldly. Finally, he spoke, his voice deep and raspy. "I am called Shane," he said. "And I am...wait! Who are you? Where am I?” He squeezed my arm in his. "My name is Harley," I replied, my voice still trembling. "And this is my home." I didn't know what else to say - I was still trying to process what was happening. He continued to stare at me, his grip on my arm tightening. I started to panic, and I tried to pull away from him.

But insane people were often way more dangerous than sane people. "I won't let you." Amos hissed between gritted teeth. He protectively placed himself in front of Azalia, his eyes turning black as his hand moved to the sword fastened to his side. The black eyes were a facial characteristic of Shachor people, dark creatures who had decimated Zahav people hundreds of years ago, and Azalia wondered if Amos used them in order to intimidate Nahash and Leor or in order to get into a battle mindset. It didn't seem to work as Nahash only sneered at Amos. "You're just a weak Zahav." He arrogantly mocked as he pulled his own sword out of its sheath. "You really think you can stop me?"

"You're awake." His voice was ruined. Hoarse. Wet. "Thank the Moon Goddess. Thank the Moon Goddess." He lunged forward, gathered me into his arms. Not gently, desperately. Like he was trying to absorb me into his body. His face buried in my neck, right against the mating mark, I felt him shaking. Valtherion Ashvane. The most feared Prime Alpha in North America. Shaking in my arms like the world had almost ended. "Don't ever do that again."

"River, your dynamic anthropomorphic design is pure genius. We’re taking first place at the robotics championship for sure this time!" Zane Ward’s excited voice dragged me out of my thoughts. I stared at the towering, human-height robot in front of me and shivered. "I’m submitting the data now. Then, all we have to do is wait for tomorrow’s live showcase!" Zane grinned as he worked the keyboard. "Wait!" My shout stopped him mid-click. "I’ve got a better idea."
