I looked at him quickly, his jaw was tight, his eyes steady, his entire body angled forward just enough to stand between Darren and me.
“She just said she doesn’t want it,” he said, calm but sharp, like the edge of a blade.
Darren’s smile cracked, his face twisted, anger flashing across it like lightning in a storm.
“Oh, of course,” he spat, his voice rising. “Of course the great Lycan King has to meddle. Because you wear a crown, you think you can step into everything that’s mine?!”
The roses fell from his hand, landing with a thud against the stones. Their petals scattered, bruised, some crushed under his boots.
