“I’m so fucking sorry, Verena. I—I didn’t mean to—”
“Shh,” I soothe, pressing a finger to his lips. “I know. It wasn’t you. You fought back, baby. You came back to me.”
He pulls me into his arms, his body still trembling with the remnants of the literal internal battle he’s fought. “I thought I’d lost you,” I murmur against his skin and he chuckles.
“Never gonna happen,” he declares, his voice rough but determined. “Not on my fucking watch.”
Before I can respond, the harsh clatter of the basement door swinging open interrupts us. We both turn to see Peter storming in, his face contorted with rage and disbelief. The air around him crackles with dark energy, his aura black as pitch.
