Something was definitely amiss. Blood!.

It sloshed around until it filled to the top. Veronica removed the needle and the smell of her blood wafted up to me. I was still in my demon form! Shit! My bloodlust started to come out as my eyes instantly went to the spot where a drop of blood seeped out over her fair skin. My throat started to burn and itch as it began to crave for blood. I gulped and forced my eyes to look away. After the second vial was full, it felt like pure torture. Veronica bandaged up Arisa, stopping the bleeding but it was too late. The smell of blood filled the room.

It was blood. “What the hell do I do after blanking out?”

Because it removed the category I had already started placing myself into, and replaced it with something I could not yet define. He paused briefly. Then spoke again. “You are considered returning blood.” The room felt quieter after that sentence. Not physically. But in me. I did not respond immediately, because the words did not make sense in the way they were delivered so calmly, so naturally, like they belonged in a system I had never been taught about. Returning blood. My mind repeated it again and again, trying to attach meaning to it, trying to connect it to anything I knew, but nothing came clearly enough to settle it.

I WALK INTO MY HOUSE, THE DOOR clicking shut behind me as I let my backpack drop onto the couch with a soft thud. My mind's a jumbled mess, and all I can think about is Chloe and what she's going through. I head straight for the kitchen, pulling open the fridge to grab a bottle of tangy animal blood. The cool liquid is just what I need right now.

I bent over dapping my fingers in the blood, inhaling the long-forgotten scent of Fenrir blood. It's time to go home.

A smell, thick and metallic, forcing its way through everything else. Blood. Fresh enough that it still carried heat in it. My stomach tightened, and for a moment I stopped breathing. There was some stupid instinct in me that wondered whether it was his, whether he had come back wounded, whether the violence that seemed to pulse so naturally through this world had finally turned and bitten one of its own. But when he stepped further into the light, I saw the truth. The dark streaks matted near his temple, the faint reddish stains still clinging to strands of damp hair, the traces at his collar where he had clearly tried to wash himself clean and failed. He held the dagger up to Ruben and Ruben stepped forward taking Batton’s other wrist and slashing it open as well. Kat gasped in a breath as Ruben stood side on to Batton and raised his hand, igniting Blood Reign and Batton’s blood started to glow, lifting up from the ground and, like dust particles in the sunlight, drifted up in small filaments and disappearing. Batton grimaced and a pained strangled noise escaped him as the Blood Reign started to pull the blood from his open veins, draining him completely. “You’ll kill him…” Kat breathed, watching with a morbid fascination.

The night pressed down like a suffocating shroud, thick with the weight of memory and blood. I could still smell it—the metallic tang of violence clinging to my skin, my hands, my soul. The men behind me walked in silence, shadows among shadows, their boots crunching softly over gravel as if the ground itself recoiled from our presence. I knew what they were thinking: that their leader had crossed another line, that the balance of blood I carried was no longer something that could be contained.
