She muttered a word under her breath and dad stepped out of the way. Mom thrust her hand forward and the blue ball floated and it tried to get out of the grip. Its flame was slowly burning out. My mom screamed an incantation and she fisted her hand. The ball disappeared in a thin smoke. “Morning, dear.” My mom said putting the scroll down. I felt my skin burning. She turned to dad.

"Don’t worry, Anna will be found soon. We’re all praying for her safe return." Shaking her head, she muttered, "Your mother has turned this into such a spectacle. A tragedy has struck the family, and instead of standing together, here we are…" Her voice trailed off in disappointment before she added, "Not a single person from the Arnello or Smith family came. We’ve been friends for generations, but look at how we are acting, throwing a ball for the sake of PR!" Damien exhaled through his nose. "It’s okay, Grandma," he said, though they both knew it wasn’t.

Suddenly, the ball slipped from his hand and flew back at Victor, who leaped to the side in time not to be hit. The sixteen-pound ball William had chosen smashed into the plastic chairs with a crash that made everyone in the building look our way. William blushed while Victor bent over with laughter. “Stop it,” I hissed at Victor. “It could happen to anybody.” I retrieved the ball and took it to William. “Try again, but hold onto the ball tighter.” “Yeah, you’re supposed to throw it the other way toward those little white pins,” Victor teased. “You roll the ball, not throw it,” I corrected.

After all, this was her doing. “Tina!” Her father roars: he was red in the face, and I can see the anger flashing through his eyes, sending a chill down my spine. “This is enough. You are embarrassing your family.
