They hadn’t understood yet: The Beacon had stopped trying not to shine. And everything that lived in the dark just turned its head.

High up on the ridge, tucked between the jagged black rocks a single yellow light was pulsing against the darkness. It was a beacon, a fragile promise of life in a landscape of absolute desolation.

Glass spiderwebbed across one of the panes. “What’s waking?” Mara demanded. “The reason the light was built,” Alden replied. “It isn’t to guide ships away.” Another impact. Stronger. The beacon of light pierced through the thick foliage, cutting a path through the shadows. It served as a guiding star, leading us toward hope and the answers we sought.
