Ace stood alone as the road curved into silence. Behind him, the woods stirred and then they came. Ten wolves. They were dark, fast, and soulless. Their eyes glowed with that same unnatural light he remembered from his days under control. Midnight Mystery wolves. They were noty just simple wolves but Engineered monsters. He didn’t hesitate. Ace shifted. His silver wolf burst forth in a flash of power and fury. His eyes gleamed violet under the rising moon. He met the first wolf mid-leap and slammed him into the dirt with a bone-breaking crunch.

She continued to strike. I was so furious that I let my inner beast take control. He emerged, a towering, fiery presence, but Sasha remained unflinching, locking eyes with my beast. My beast's eyes burned red, and he growled at her, baring his fangs. Normally, this display would send other wolves cowering in fear, but Sasha continued her relentless assault, prompting my beast to lunge at her.

The wolf staggered forward, collapsing at her side, their blood mingling in the red-stained silt. “Jay! Behind you!” Lyssa yelled from the crowd. Alastair launched himself at the wounded wolf, the cougar’s teeth bared, but a feral snarl sounded from the back of the crowd. In unison, Elias, Xander, and the rest of the wolves leaped, changing into their wolf forms together, and started taking down the hunters. Wolves ran into the warehouse, along with some shifters in their human forms. Still invisible, Eve and I started picking off the men in the field one at a time. I flipped one over my shoulder and took away his weapon. He held up his hands and ran toward the warehouse as if a ghost were chasing him, but Eve caught him before he got far, hitting him on the back of the head with her pipe.

His chest still rose and fell from the game, his jersey tugged tight across muscles hockey shouldn’t legally be allowed to build.
