A nightmare love story told a thousand different ways. I closed my eyes, trying to shift past my instinctual disgust. It bothered me more than I could say that I did actually like it. That there was an uncanny beauty to it, even below the vague nausea of my initial reaction. Unseelie beauty meant disorder and imbalance. But there was a grotesque and gorgeous fascination to it—rotten and tragic and difficult. My phone jostled on the sheets beside my knee, and I glanced down at a text from a number I didn't know:

Beauty shook her head. “You will never change, Jessie”.

It's worse than any broken bone I've ever had. I drop onto the edge of my bed, chest still heaving. My hand is stained red, knuckles torn and raw, but the only thing that burns more than the sting of broken skin is the image seared behind my fucking eyes. Beatrice. That long, straight, brown hair. The kind of hair I ache to tangle around my fist and pull until she whimpers. The way it framed her delicate face. Those big, soft, honey brown eyes wide with want. And her mouth. That perfect fucking mouth. Lips parted to let out those shaky little breaths I felt ghost across my skin. The way she surrendered beneath me—unsure, unsteady, and sweet enough to drive me insane.

“We’ll try a spoon of applesauce in a bit. Then soup if the gods smile.” She made a face I mentally captioned bribable. “You brought books,” she said, as if she had to confirm it was real and not a fever hallucination. “I did. No onions.” Her laugh tumbled out—rough around the edges, precious because it was possible. “Thank you. For all of it. The ugly parts included.” “That’s part of the thing,” I said. “The bad and the boring. The good is easy. The ugly is where the vows go.”
