For a few minutes, the laughter returned—Sussy balancing one on her nose until Becky stole it, Annie laughing so hard her stomach hurt. But as the tray emptied, their eyes drifted back to the hidden board.
Later, in the dim glow of Annie’s bedside lamp, they lay in their sleeping bags whispering.
“I don’t trust Adrian,” Becky said into the silence. “He’s too smooth. Everything he says feels like he’s covering something.”
