Written without the preemptive defense. She thought: whoever reads those pages will know, from the first paragraphs, what kind of book this is. The book will announce itself. And the readers who need it will know. She went inside and made tea and went to her workspace and kept working on the second book, which was beginning to take the shape she’d been waiting for. The second book announced itself to her in January the way the memoir had announced itself — not as a plan but as a necessity. The sense of something that had been accumulating reaching the point where it needed to become language.

Sleep finally claimed her, but her mind remained restless, anxious about the life she was about to begin. Morning came, crisp and bright. She woke early, heart fluttering, and quickly dressed in her neatly pressed outfit. She looked in the mirror and smiled smart, confident, ready. Entering the college hall, she took a deep breath. This was it: the doctor’s medicine class, the first step toward her dream of becoming a doctor. As she walked in, a hush fell over the room. “Isn’t that… Cara Johnson?” someone whispered. “She looks amazing!” “Oh my God!”

Then went back too. The evening continued. Dinner. Speeches from Rachel. From partners. From women the foundation had helped who now worked for it. From legislators whose bills had passed because the foundation had advocated. I sat with Marcus and let it all be real. The third book released two weeks later. Not about surviving. Not about The Covenant. About healing. About what came after survival. About learning to tolerate happiness without waiting for it to end. About the specific work of becoming real when you'd spent years being made into something else.

Everything was changing too quickly and The Books of Life were becoming the center of everything. And if we didn't get them as we initially planned, we might miss the change and as well, get affected by it negatively.

Bound in red thread, A single line appeared on the cover, written in her own blood: “If I survive, I must become.” The Reader offered her the book. “Write your ending,” they said. “But remember, whatever you write becomes truth.”

This book is dedicated to Bukade—my awesome friend who's helped me very very much in the creation of this book, and Favour Edem, too—my first love, for taking her time to explain stuffs about Werewolves, and Vamps, and Witches to me.
