Kai turned to me, his face blank, though his grasp remained firm on my arm. “You alright?” he asked. I nodded, swallowing hard. “I… yeah.” His shoulders were strained and his jaw was tight. "Please," he whispered. "Let's take you back home.” We walked back to the small cabin that had begun to feel safe, his home. The door closed behind us, and I collapsed onto the rickety couch, covering my face with my hands. Kai crouched ahead of me. "Is he one of your people?" I nodded, my voice uncertain.

Like the moment just before the world realizes it has been outplayed. For one giddy second I believe it. I believe I have outfoxed them all. I believe that the river will swallow us whole and carry us away before any of them can lay a hand on me. I believe that by the time Damian reaches the villa he will find nothing but crates and smoke and shattered lanterns. I believe the next chapter of my life is already written. “Get in,” I command, forcing Charlotte toward the boat. Her eyes narrow. Her lip curls with defiance. Despite the blood on her face she smiles, a small, terrible smile that unsettles me for the first time tonight.

I could stop her. I do nothing. Because I believe in her. Because, like an idiot, I believe in the memories she’s been giving me one by one: Galway, the chapel, her grandmother’s ring, the Trinity rooftop, and Sirius. I believe she’ll go down the stairs, feel the weight of that American bastard’s lie, and pull back. That she’ll come back of her own free will, shaking, choosing truth over conditioning. I stay lying there, listening to the SUV’s engine disappear down the secondary road.

I feel completely paralyzed, trapped by a sense of intimidation that I can’t quite shake. His raw power is doing things to me—things I’m not supposed to be feeling, let alone listening to. I told myself I would only read a little. That’s what I always tell myself. Like I have any authority over that decision once the pages are in my hands. The next chapter wasn’t worse. At first. That was the problem. It started almost… normal again. Like the story was trying to convince me it hadn’t already shifted into something heavier.
