“They’re just stories people tell themselves to feel something.” The receptionist had given her the heavy brass key with a nervous laugh. “Just… ring the front desk if anything unusual happens.” Sophia unpacked in the lavish suite, admiring the antique four-poster bed, the velvet drapes, and the claw-foot bathtub that overlooked the stormy sea. She showered, slipped into a silky black slip, and settled into bed with a book on cognitive biases, determined to prove once again that the supernatural was nonsense. The lights dimmed on their own at midnight.

One of the men asks, making the others laugh. "No, I plan on making this flame bigger and burning your asses so we can have a barbecue. Anyone hungry?" I ask the others as the flame grows bigger; when I pull my hand back to throw, they begin running toward the back of the cave from which they came. I throw the flame, and they scream as they run. I like having magic; I can't wait to find out what else I can do. "This isn't the last you'll hear from us," Cypress yells.

“I have a book I think you might enjoy." "What is it about?" I asked him curiously. "Most servants can't read. I usually read for them." "It's a book of short stories. Most are fairy tales- Half-fish people want to be full people. A princess trying to beat her pre-destined fate. Children who are abandoned in the woods try to find their way home. There are several stories within the book." "Sounds interesting," I replied, watching Bart rejoin us. I got up quickly to help him with the trays.

The old castle stood high on the rocky hill where the forest met the mountains. Its stone walls were cracked and covered with thick vines. No one had lived there for hundreds of years. People in the nearby village whispered that the place held something dangerous. Something that burned hotter than any flame. Elias had heard all the stories but he still came anyway. At twenty six years old he felt stuck in his small quiet life. He worked in the village bakery during the day and spent his nights reading old books about forgotten magic. One book spoke of a fire demon who once ruled these lands. The words pulled at him until he could not stay away.

“Goodness, I wasn’t ready for that, you had me so relaxed OWWWW!” That second one was even harder. Her skin immediately showed the effects, turning a few shades of light red. It felt like invisible handcuffs were holding my wrists above my head and my ankles spread wide apart. Tears streamed down my face, my heart racing at the fact that I was completely trapped. “Guys! Something’s holding me down! Help! Something crazy's going on!!" My friends were still banging on the door, panicking. “Sophia? We’re trying to get in! Just hold on!” A foggy, shadowy figure materialized at the foot of the bed. Tall, dark, with glowing silver eyes. I knew it wasn't human, the shape was all wrong — too fluid with too many limbs shifting in the darkness.
