AMELIA “I can’t believe it didn’t work,” I grunted in anger as I stabbed the sword into the book, and it did nothing. “It’s empty now, but a piece of useless old shit.” The book was around four inches thick. The hardcover seemed to be made of animal skin. The smell was like an old rotten dead rat. I was expecting suggestions, but everyone’s mouth was shut this time. “Really?” My eyes narrowed at them. “Now I need your unsolicited advice and you’ve got nothing. You, Theia. You’re very opinionated. What do you have in mind?”

I had a horrible feeling I was about to regret it. I didn’t hand her the book right away. She seemed way too eager, and it made me feel uneasy. “Yes, where you said it would be. I had no problem entering. Guess I am no witch then.” I mused, clutching the book to my chest, despite it giving me the creeps. The leather binding weirdly reminded me of human skin. She smirked; steely eyes fixed on me. “I guess not. Give it to me,” she demanded. The light scones against the wall flickered once, twice. Their dim light tried in vain to illuminate the cloying darkness in the passage.

I squinted my eyes and glared at her. Tentatively, she removed the paper cover of her book. Underneath was a far cry from the gently paper cover. The paper cover had a street with cherry blossoms blooming on each side. The title ‘Never Apart’ indicated a soft romance. The ‘real’ book cover, the one hidden under cherry blossoms was a half naked man, He had no shirt and showed tight muscles. all over his torso were tattoos His hand enclosed the throat of a blonde girl, she was dressed in a shirt probably his because of how large it is. Her head is thrown back in obvious pleasure and the title is ‘Choke me Harder.’ Definitely nothing a sophisticated young miss should read.

It has the picture of two people, a man and a woman, lying in bed, tangled up in the white sheets and in each other’s arm, asleep. The picture makes my face heat up as my brain begins to process what must have happen for them to be tangled together…naked, as I see no clothing on them, except the sheets hiding a lot from the imagination. I do a quick flip through the content of the book and notice that some wordings have been neatly underlined. Has he gone through all these? Were these underlined words a hidden message for me? I stop in my scan at a particular page at the middle part of the book, as my eyes zone in on that particular word that has about three lines underlining it.

Distractedly, I left the book I wanted to pull behind and walked towards the table. Lily’s light scent of flowers hung in the air, and instinctively I just knew that was where she had been researching the day before. Curiously, I looked at the books on the table. One of them looked older than the rest. It’s pages were already yellowed and a corner looked burned off. With a frown, I held the thick back of the book and closed it to see the cover. FAE: The primals in human skin. Goosebumps rose along my arms and I shivered as I read the title.

STEPPING INSIDE THE ROOM of steel, pressing the button with the number 20, watching as the doors close and the elevator begins to rise. The reflecting steel walls allow me to take in my appearance. Taking out the blue contacts that help to keep my identity hidden, I toss them in the trash.
