I smiled and brought out a new novel I got from the store the other day and opened the first chapter to read. It has never been my goal to impress my sister with anything I do. I scroll through the books in the library until I come to my favourite section, Mystery. I always love the thrill that comes with not knowing what's going to happen next. You can make it more interesting for yourself if you start to wonder what is happening and what will happen. I went on in a spur of excitement. "It's a thriller and mystery novel about a detective who's trying to track down a serial killer. So many twists and cliffhangers. Total page-turner." I giggled.

That would be emotional suicide. I moved away from the romance section quickly, like it might contaminate me somehow. Crime thriller. I'd read a crime thriller. Something with murder and investigations and absolutely zero sexual tension. That was safer. Much safer. I browsed the mystery section and pulled out a book I'd heard good things about. A detective novel set in London. Dark, gritty, complex. Perfect. I carried it to one of the comfortable chairs by the window and settled in. The chair was incredibly comfortable—soft leather that seemed to mold around me. There was a small side table with a reading lamp. A footstool I could put my feet up on.

As I flipped to the next page, I took a sip of coffee and continued reading, almost reaching the end of the page, I heard footsteps coming from the hallway, I gaze at the door and then back to the book. My expression changed after I read a paragraph. The number one thing I love about mystery novels is that they always come with unexpected twists. I was about to flip to the next page when I heard fast footsteps from the hallway. "What is Jess doing?" I whispered, shrugging back to continue reading the book.
