“Then why?”
Because I can’t afford to lose you.
The thought came uninvited, sharp and immediate, but I swallowed it before it could reach my lips. I shouldn’t catch myself saying that now, should I?
“Because someone is targeting you,” I said instead. “And until I know who, I’m not taking chances.”
He held my gaze, searching, weighing.
“That’s the bodyguard talking,” he said.
I tilted my head slightly. “Does it matter which part of me is saying it?”
