Richard looked between the photographs. “What happens to the other?” Gabriel smiled. “He becomes the sacrifice.” My blood turned cold. Lucien stared at the screen. “Which one?” The recording suddenly glitched. The answer was missing. But a final file appeared. BETRAYAL EVENT — DAY 10. The screen showed my father standing over a bloodied man. I couldn’t see his face. Then Richard spoke. “You betrayed us.” The wounded man laughed. “No.” He lifted his head. “I betrayed you because you betrayed them first.”

I know he’s the right person to fill that void for Freya, but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to trust someone again. I trusted Anton when we were younger, but every time I called him, he was at a club or party where tons of women were in the background, causing me to worry, so I broke up with him. He swears he was faithful to me the entire time, and I want to believe him, but there’s a voice in the back of my mind that doubts him. I married Lincoln, believing that he truly loved me and would be faithful, only to find out how foolish I was.

“For some. For others, a rope.” Gregory’s shoulders collapsed. He covered his face with his hands and let out one sharp breath. He had been a good man in the ways that count. He had bled and laughed. I had trusted him. The injury of his betrayal cut deep because I did not expect it. Even the cold wind which I used to run away from wasn't giving me any kind of feeling right now. How am I supposed to get by knowing that almost all the people I trusted betrayed me? Do they even know how betrayal can shatter someone completely? I continue walking and walking, keeping with the rain's pace as it landed on the ground, keep my legs from moving to ease this troubled mind. But I guess I don't really have a place to go. James obliged, his jaw clenched tight, not uttering a word. Pulling into a drab apartment building in a quiet neighborhood, James finally spoke. "If this is a trap, Louis, I swear to God- "It's not," Louis interrupted, his own voice tight. "I know I've betrayed your trust, James, but right now, I'm all you've got. We're in this together." James laughed bitterly. "Together? You shot my wife, Louis. You've been lying to me for years. We're not in anything together."
