I was solving it in my head, writing numbers fast without thinking.
I didn’t notice Alan watching until it was too late.
“Whoa,” he said, leaning over. “What is that? It looks super complicated. Are you doing that for class?”
I slammed the notebook shut fast, my heart racing. “It’s nothing. Just doodles. For my cousin.”
Alan looked at me with curious eyes. “Didn’t look like doodles. You were writing formulas like it was easy. Toby, if you’re really smart, you don’t have to hide it from me.”
