I looked at the bills, at the cold numbers that represented my mother’s life measured in dollars I didn’t have. I looked at his check, the amount line waiting for me to decide my own price. I looked at his note and heard his voice in my head, calm and certain and patient. Just his hand reaching across the distance, waiting for me to take it. And once I do, there’s no turning back.
