"It's the only way you can kill me." Sweat beaded on his forehead. As soon as she wiped the moisture from his skin, it was drenched again. As he panted and thrashed in barely contained agony, his gray eyes turned black with slivers of silver. His features were beginning to distort and she couldn't tell if it was a strange trick of the light, or if there really was a thin, oscillating shadow hovering just above the surface of his skin. The shadow grew more and more noticeable and she realized it wasn't a shadow at all. It looked like millions upon millions of tiny particles of ink all hovering and floating together in the same nebulous cloud.

Jet every time I blink, I see her, the woman with the crimson eyes. She stood at the edge of the campus, right where the light from the buildings began to fade and the shadows of the forest swallowed the ground. Black hair that moved like smoke in the breeze. Eyes so red they didn’t look real. Yet I know what I saw. The eerie stillness in her body. The way she didn’t move, didn’t flinch, just watched, as if she was waiting for something. Or someone.

Her eyes widened, almost comically large with shock, as she saw the figure standing there, materializing from the shadows. She couldn’t quite discern whether it was a man or a woman, as its features were remarkably mixed, almost unsettlingly ambiguous. The eyes resembled black, hollow pits, ringed by a dark, sickly golden shadow. The eyebrows were not merely plucked, but shaved upwards into sharp, unnatural arches, severe and angular, as if meant to represent dark, predatory wings unfurling from its brow.

Both he and Seb stared, their shock absolute. Nate lifted a trembling hand to his face. His fingers—no, his claws—met not skin, but a raised, rigid pattern. In the reflection of the car window, he saw the nightmare. Thick, tar-black streaks, like corrupted veins or the branches of a dead tree, ran from his hairline down over his temple and cheek, completely covering the left side of his face. His left eye was no longer his own. The sclera was stained a solid, glossy black, and in the center, where his pupil should be, glowed a single, hellish point of burning red.

But I can't just make sense of what it is. The shadow suddenly growls loudly and I feel the building shaking terribly. My eyes snap open and a scream leaves my lips in an instant. Two big black wolves are sprinting towards me with inhuman speed. That's when I realise the growl is from them, not the shadow. One has glowing silver eyes and for a moment, I can't help but think of Knox. The other behind him has glowing red eyes. The shadow on the floor hisses the instant their paws get closer. Then in the blink of an eye, it's gone. It disappears as if it's scared of the wolves.

It came out in a weak whisper, but he didn’t even glance at me. His wolf was coming. I’d never seen anything like it — like a nightmare forcing itself into daylight. It wasn’t just an ordinary black wolf. The fur wasn’t fur; it was pitch, glinting faintly like oil under a blood moon. Its eyes weren’t gold or amber like other alphas — they were dark red, glowing faintly from the inside, and the air around it shivered with heat and cold at once. And when it opened its jaws, its teeth looked wet with crimson even though it hadn’t bitten yet.

All our eyes snapped to a man in the sea of wolves. "Long time no see my...dearest...friend." The man's eyes blazed a bright, blood red at his last word. Eli snarled, his body vibrating. The man strolled forward and finally stood in the light. His chocolate brown hair shone in the sun, his red eyes looked fierce caged by his black lashes. He was muscular, dark, almost morbid.

The one who had turned the rogues into monsters. The figure stood at the edge of the battlefield, watching us as if we were nothing more than ants scurrying about, unaware of their impending doom. His presence was like a dark cloud that tainted everything in its wake, suffocating the air, making it harder to breathe. His eyes glowed a deep red, the color of something otherworldly, as if he were not fully human at all. I could feel the power emanating from him, an energy that both drew me in and repelled me at the same time.

“You think it’s them?” Sam didn’t answer, her gaze locked on the meadow. Then she saw them—shadows moving through the fog, their forms low and predatory. The thick metal gate groaned behind him, and within moments, he stopped directly in front of me. Standing that close, I was forced to confront just how enormous he truly was. His broad frame towered over me, casting a dark shadow that completely swallowed my smaller figure. The bright lights above no longer reached me as clearly, blocked by his intimidating presence. I had to tilt my head slightly upward just to meet his gaze. For a moment, neither of us spoke. I stared into his eyes once more, unable to look away. The crimson glow within his irises remained as vivid. The red color pulsed rhythmically, almost like a living heartbeat trapped inside his eyes. Every flash of that eerie light se
