A massive, mutated spider the size of a dinner plate had dropped from the ceiling onto Valen’s shoulder. I couldn't swing. I was too far away. "No!" I yelled. Valen didn't scream. He looked at the spider. The spider raised its fangs, dripping with black venom. Valen’s eyes flared gold. He didn't pull. He pushed. He opened his mouth and bit the air in front of him. CRUNCH. A sound like a thunderclap inside a jar. The spider didn't explode. It imploded. It crumpled inward, as if a giant invisible hand had crushed it into a singularity. Then, a stream of blue light shot from the crushed carcass into Valen’s mouth.

As Lars finished speaking, a shroud of ghost energy enveloped him. Suddenly, Chase's ears were filled with a hiss that sounded like a mix between a snake and a dragon. The ghost energy behind Lars coalesced, forming a three-meter-tall figure with the head of a dragon, the body of a turtle, and the tail of a serpent—an unmistakable image of the Black Turtle.
