I let out an ear-splitting scream and jumped in horror when I felt a grip around my wrist.

Elara slammed back into the wall, breaking his grip, then hooked her foot behind his knee and sent him crashing down. Before she could finish it, a black SUV screeched to a halt at the mouth of the alley. Cassidy stepped out. She wasn’t dressed for subtlety—red leather jacket, gold chain at her throat, dark hair pulled back tight. Her eyes locked on Elara with a smile that didn’t reach them. “You’ve been busy,” Cassidy said, her voice like velvet over glass. “I should thank you. I didn’t realize how many rats I had until you scared them out of hiding.”

Cassian's pov I nurse my bottle of scotch leaning my elbows on the railings. The cold air sweeps over my face as my eyes scan the compound. The sky is a canvas of stars, their cold glow barely touching the vast darkness covering the estate. I move my eyes to the swimming pool where a silhouette of a woman swims there in a red bikini. The blue glow from the pool makes her look ethereal — until recognition slaps. It's Maya. What the fuck?

Cassie’s POV I leaned on the balcony, gazing at the stars. The mountain where our pack territory was located provided a stunning view of the night sky, making the stars seem almost unreal. Every night, I wished for safety and peace, hoping our Luna would bless us. The ongoing war between our kind, the humans who knew about us, and the bloodthirsty rogues felt like an unstoppable force. "Hey," Kaiden muttered next to my ear. Deep in thought, I hadn't noticed him approach.

She hurriedly checked her bag to see if every necessary item was in it. After confirming, she picked up her phone from the desk, hung her bag over her shoulder, and quickly walked out of her office. She met her boss standing beside his office and they both walked out of the building together. "Take us to the Greys," He told his driver when they were in the car. Caitlyn tilted her head to face him. "The Greys? Why are we going there, sir?" They had handled a case for that family in the previous year and Caitlyn regretted it. They were a powerful family with so many enemies who were prepared to shed blood at every opportunity they got.

He had never left. Cassian had watched from the shadows of the VIP lounge as the Blackwood family made their hurried, arrogant exit. He had known the moment he saw Damien’s smug expression that the bastard had left her behind. He didn't pull away. Instead, he lingered, instructing his bodyguard to keep a sharp watch on the grand entrance. The moment the alert came— “She’s out, sir” Cassian made a deliberate show of returning to his car. He wanted her to see him. He wanted to be the only hand reaching out in the dark.

Third Person's POV Watching Mrs. Crees practically flee the scene, Wynn wasted no time and speed-dialed Cassian. Her voice vibrated with the excitement of someone looking to score brownie points. "Cassian, just like you planned, the bait has been snapped up by Mrs. Crees. It won't be long before a glorious dogfight breaks out inside Blackthorn." The moment she hung up, Wynn couldn't wait to harass Trista all the way across the world.

"Then why are you here?" Cassian took a breath. "There's a blood curse destroying my empire," he said, "my wolf is dying, my company is failing, everything is falling apart." I waited. "The pack elders say the only way to break it is through a mate bond," he continued, "which means you." "No," I said immediately. "I'm offering five million dollars," Cassian said, "one year of pretending to be my mate, then we go our separate ways." Five million would save the sanctuary, pay off every debt, and give Maya the life she deserved.

“Leave. Now. Before I decide you are an active threat to a child under my protection.” The commander’s hand moved toward his weapon. “We have authorisation from—” I moved faster than human eyes could track, crossing the distance between us in a heartbeat. My hand closed around his throat, lifting him off the ground. “I do not care about your authorisation. I do not care about your research. I care about that little girl sleeping up there who has already been traumatised enough. You will not add to it.” His team raised their weapons, but Cassandra was already moving. Silver light lashed out, destroying guns before they could fire. The three wolves with the humans shifted, preparing to attack.
