The wound underneath is ugly—ragged, half-healed, puckered with the start of infection. She cleans it without comment, hands steady and surprisingly gentle. For a long time, the only sound is the pop and hiss of the fire. Lyla finally breaks the silence. “You’re not like the other healers.” Cassie smiles, not looking up. “You mean because I’m six years younger than you and twice as sexy? And you’re not like the other Blackwoods.” Lyla’s nostrils flare, but she says nothing. When Cassie finishes, she presses Lyla’s hand with a kind of lingering, unspoken respect. “You’ll have full function back by the next moon. Just don’t pick any more fights with alphas twice your weight.”

When I looked to see why Martin sounded so angry I saw that Cassie was bleeding from her side. "Martin, get Dr. Branson," I said. "Take Leonardo with you." I tried to keep Cassie with me. She kept fading out of consciousness. Finally, Martin and Dr. Branson came back. "Martin, take Marco to the base. Silver him and have Dr. Jones give him wolfsbane every hour. We are going to keep him there until Cassie is better." I said without taking my eyes off of my mate.

Cassidy POV "How much does she know?" I asked, pointing at Lisa and ignoring her mother entirely. Kieran nodded. "Can we all just sit?" Lisa and Susan moved toward the sofa near the fireplace, keeping as much distance as possible between us. "We've reached the point where partial explanations are no longer useful," Kieran said, his eyes staying on Lisa until she finally looked back at him. She had handed him her trust already. That much was obvious. "This is Cassidy," Kieran told her, his hand reaching toward my side of the room. "The woman I told you about. The one connected to the people who helped me survive Meridian conditioning years ago.”

She wants me to know that she has been seen. She suddenly blinks, and I see the last thing that I expect to see that morning. Her silver eyes suddenly shine perfectly, almost creating their own beam. I glance at Kaden and he has a smirk on his face obviously feeling my arousal through the bond and he feels the same way. Casey pulls her forward and introduces us. Cassidy POV I was awoken by a hose spraying wolfsbane at me from below. I cry out in pain as it tears into my skin. Some of it getting into my throat and burning me from the inside as I instinctively swallow. I hear laughter at my pain and I open my eyes for the first time in this room. I’ve been too scared; I didn’t want them to see the fear in my eyes but I couldn’t keep my eyes closed forever.
