The steel blade was no longer humming with a blue electrical current; it was coated in a thick, oily black smoke that carried the unmistakable, suffocating clicking sound of the First Soul Eater. Laila brought her left blade up to block the strike, the sapphire fire of her steel meeting the black mist of the naginata with a horrific, screeching sound that sounded like a metal file scraping against her skull. I watched keenly as the machine went on, and Blackwood’s entire body bulked widely from the heavy electrocution. His fingers holding the bed sheet in a tighter grip, his teeth gnashing against one another.

"What's wrong? Is it the blade?" She pressed a hand to her head for a moment, then dropped it, her voice unsteady. "Blackbane core isn't just any weapon. It was made to kill Alphas in a way nothing else can heal them. It doesn't just wound the body. It spreads through the blood. It shuts everything down slowly, piece by piece." My stomach tightened."Then there has to be a way to stop it." She didn't respond. "Mother," I pushed, my voice rising. "There has to be something please." Desperation etched in my voice right now.

Ren switched his visual feeds to ambient-light amplification. Emerging from the pitch-black shadows of the dead Sector 6 streets were shapes. They were sleek, humanoid, and entirely painted in light-absorbing vantablack. They didn't carry kinetic rifles. They carried long, vibrating, high-frequency monomolecular blades that emitted no heat and no light. "Target lock failed," Ren's internal system warned him. Thousands of hydro-dynamic, black-armored Abyssal-Strikers and hulking, rust-covered Trench-Walkers surged forward, their optic sensors glowing a sickly, radioactive green in the pitch-black water. We don't hold the line! We break the center!" Dax commanded, pushing forward into the horde.
