I shouted. I stepped out from behind Rowan. The obsidian blade in my hand felt different now. It wasn't just a heavy piece of stone. It was light, almost weightless, and it thrummed with the soft, white light of the girl I had seen in the warehouse. It was the **Blade of the Unsaid**. Every word I had swallowed, every dream I had put aside for the sake of survival, every "I love you" that had been lost in the roar of battle—it was all there, feeding the light. Vane pivoted, his liquid form spinning like a drill. He ignored Rowan and came for me. He was fast—too fast for a human to track. He was a blur of silver and shadow.

Watching his flanks collapse, his squad get picked apart, with the calm patience of a man who'd already factored in these losses. Because I was exactly where he wanted me. "There you are," he said. He was tall in person. Taller than Valtherion. Lean, angular, with the economy of movement that spoke of decades of combat. Gray at the temples. Pale eyes that reflected the moonlight like mirrors. The water around us formally against pressure waves. Each shot torn one of the creepers into pieces, but it were too many. One of the Aale broke through Kael's defensive line and shot right on my face too. I instinctively ripped up the Vibro cutter. The Ungetüm rammed into the high frequency Blade and was slit in length. Smoke curled from his fingertips. "What the hell is on this blade?" he hissed. Poison? Dark magic? Both? He didn't wait. His mindlink flared hot, coming out as a roar. Fin: Aeron. I need you. Now. Nova was stabbed and bleeding black. The blade burns me.

Blood darkens his fur. He doesn’t make a sound. The cut doesn’t slow him. I duck under a snapping jaw and roll, coming up on one knee with my second blade already up. I strike again. Deeper. Cleaner. This is familiar. The burn in my arms. The narrowing of my vision. The way the rest of the world drops out when my body remembers what it’s for.
