They ran anyway, breathless though they didn’t need breath. The reaper’s scythe slashed again, carving through smoke and bone. The Wraith howled, splitting apart, dragged back into the cracks it had torn in the Veil. The air sealed shut with a thunderclap. Silence fell. Avery pressed against the nearest wall, gasping. Their hands shook violently. “What the hell was that—what the hell was that?” The reaper planted their scythe into the ground and leaned on it, eyes burning with cold fury. “That was the mess you made.”

Blake tightened his arm around my waist, holding me upright as the two of us looked at the map. A dark forest appeared, none of the trees had leaves on their branches, and one could tell that they had been dead for a while. An owl flew in the dark night before landing on top of what looked like a reaper’s scythe. The reaper had no face but the words ‘answer the question with all honesty or die,’ repeated itself in the air before the owl flew once again. I looked at Blake for a second before he nodded, assuring me that he was there for me. I knew that he was also scared of what he was seeing. This was not something that we were used to and the amount of magic could be felt within or veins.

He stepped over it, wiping his gloved fingers on his thigh, leaving dark smears. Cannes' men swung their weapons toward the new threat, but Decker didn't flinch. He just tilted his head, the skull mask catching the dim light. “Pointing your guns at my friend is a crime in its own right. Pointing it at me is different. Surely, you can tell the others who did are dead?” Fuck, if I could cum right now, I would. “Nice timing, Reap.” Decker didn’t look at me. Instead, his mask stayed facing Cannes who seemed awestruck at first but after a few minutes, stretched his hand out as he slapped on a perfectly normal smile on his face. “You are a very hard man to find, Reaper King.”

He didn’t say the name with love, that’s for sure. “I am.” Hunter nodded hesitantly. “How is Collin a reaper? What are reapers exactly?” Callie asked. “Reapers are kind of like special agents. Trained to deal with combat and other things. Reapers are normally sent out in groups to bring in the people on the list.” “They abduct people?” Callie’s eyebrow shifted up. “Kind of.” He nodded. “What do they do to the people they capture?” I asked hesitantly. “I don’t know.” Hunter replied, “Reapers are required to work on orders, no questions asked.”

I let the Void do the talking. I swept my wing out in a wide, vicious arc. The mercury blades didn't just cut; they erased. The pikes shattered into dust, and the Alphas were thrown across the deck, their armor melting as the Void-energy ate through their circuits. I was a storm of black-and-gold, a "Lagos-grit" reaper moving through the center of the world's power.

Pale skin like porcelain, eyes blacker than night itself, and a presence that made the air feel too heavy to breathe. “I am what waits at the end of your kind,” the figure said, voice deep and hollow. “You were given years you did not deserve, Clark.” “What the f*ck are you talking about?!” Clark spat, backing away. “Get out of here—this is none of your business!” The Reaper tilted his head. “You stole her breath. Now, I take yours.”

I yelled back. A laugh escaped her lips, wild, terrified and real. The wyrm lunged again and I twisted sharply, rolling across the sand and pulling out the blade Caleb had pressed in both Kara and I hands. It was a sharp dagger. Not longer than a forearm. When it came close enough, I swung upward, slicing through one of its fins. It screamed, a piercing, otherworldly sound that made my ears ring. Kara’s voice rang out, “Reese, behind you!”

He was always so pleased by her speed and ruthlessness in dispatching his elder children, that he doted on her during class. She was unrivaled in hand-to-hand, quicker and more sure-footed than her siblings. She was deadly with small blades as well, and kept one tucked in her boot at all times, just in case any of Killian's cronies took the young Lord at his word and tried to have her quietly dispatched. Not that she ever represented a true threat to either Killian or Reena, she was just as much her mother's daughter as her father's, and it was likely she would be a prey shifter rather than a predator.
