"Sorry, my brother is mute, so he can only communicate through sign language and writing," Leo said as his gaze watched Riley carefully, waiting for her reaction, but he saw no disgust, no judgment; her expression was neutral.
"Well done; it must have been hard fending for yourself against the bullies, but you still protected my brother. Thank you, Shane," Riley said, and I saw Shane blush slightly.
"You're welcome," Shane signed,
"He said—" Leo was about to say, but she cut him off with a polite smile.
