I crawled to him, my fingers trembling. His skin was cold, and golden blood still pooled beneath him. But he looked at me, and smiled.
Then, a blinding explosion of light tore through the castle. Xareth let out a scream a high, broken wail as his body split with radiance. The light burst from his chest, his mouth, his very pores.
And from within him, the Heartstones emerged, one after the other, glowing and humming with ancient energy. They floated upward, suspended in golden light, before each stone found its way to its rightful bearer.
