Back in Black Hollow, John prepared for the descent. Callen stood with him at the old altar, now reformed. “The Hollow Within exists between worlds. It’s not a place you walk into. It’s one you surrender to.” “I’m ready.” “You’re not,” Callen said. “But love doesn’t wait.” He handed John a blade not metal, but bone-white. “This belonged to your father. It only cuts through lies. You’ll need it.”

For a heartbeat, the vision of the Hollow Queen and the Exiled Light is eclipsed by the black bloom — its petals stretching greedily toward their threads. And from the dark beneath all realms, a voice not meant for gods whispers into the chamber: “Mine.”

I can tell by the way Rye and Blain stare at the picture they know them. “The one guy is Stephano. He is a demon hybrid. His father was a demon but his mother was a witch.” Blain says. “And the other guy?” Kaleb asks. “He goes by the name Blackout. I have no idea how he got that nickname. He is a hybrid. His mother was a witch and his father is a dark fae.” Rye says.

She was staring at the center of the room, where a patch of darkness seemed to be breathing. It was a "Hollowed"—a wolf that looked like a sketch made of smoke and ash. It had no face, only a vertical slit of violet light where its heart should be. "Give," the creature hissed, the sound echoing not in the room, but directly inside our minds. "The Mother... demands... her tithe." The First Strike Kaelen didn't hesitate. He shifted into the Great Black Wolf, a mountain of midnight muscle, and lunged. But his teeth passed right through the creature as if it were nothing but cold air.

The longer it went on, the less it resembled a fight and the more it resembled an execution. The second wolf had not even managed to rise when the black wolf’s jaws closed around its throat. Its fangs clamped down and tore violently through skin and flesh. Blood splattered onto the asphalt—warm and thick. Then the body went limp and lifeless, no longer moving. Eirene froze. The horrific sight made her swallow hard. Meanwhile, the remaining four wolves snarled in unison. They spread out, trying to surround the black wolf from different sides. But the black wolf did not retreat. It showed no fear at all. Its sharp eyes stared straight at the four wolves without wavering. Then it spun swiftly.

And from its heart, something began to emerge — a shape woven of shadow and blood, wearing a thousand faces Kaelira once loved and lost. Her knees nearly buckled. “It’s the Echo,” she whispered. “The last remnant of the Black Moon.” It smiled — a cruel, shifting thing. You brought him here, it hissed. How generous. Another vessel to consume. Zevran didn’t flinch. “You’ll choke on me before that happens.” The battle began like a storm breaking open — lightning and steel, magic and fury. Kaelira unleashed her power, the air crackling with blue fire as runes carved themselves across her skin. Zevran moved like a phantom, every strike precise, every step anchored in the rhythm of survival.

Like death. And then— A hand reached up from the dark. Small. Feral. Clawed. The Hollow shook, and the figure rose—slowly, painfully—dragging itself into the light. A child. No—older than a child, but not grown. Maybe fourteen. Maybe less. Skin pale as moonlight. Hair matted with blood. Eyes pitch black, void of irises. My mouth went dry. “What is that?” My brother didn’t move. Didn’t breathe. Just whispered:

My mark was exposed, angry and red, glowing faintly now with its last flickers of life. One witch placed both hands over the mark. Another poured oil black as void across my shoulders. It dripped in slow streams down my spine, seeping into me like cold fire. I trembled. Then came the chant. It rose in layers, guttural, high, dissonant, echoing from earth and air and the burning pool. The Hollow's power wasn't gentle. It wasn't light. It did not heal. It unmade. It devoured. It ripped through me like claws, scraping marrow from bone, peeling back everything I was until only the hollow shape of my purpose remained.
