“Cael—” “Stay behind me.” A shape materialized ahead of them. Then another. And another. Three Hollowborn stepped from the shadows, tall and gaunt, their bodies shifting like liquid smoke. Their heads tilted in eerie synchrony, empty faces turning toward Lyra. They had no eyes, yet she felt them staring straight through her. The nearest one extended a long, crooked arm. Its fingers dripped tendrils of black mist that hissed when they touched the pavement. Lyra stumbled back. “No—no, no—”

Then entered them both. Aria collapsed to her knees, her body trembling. Kaelion rushed to her side, his mark blazing. “It’s starting,” he said. Aria nodded, her voice thin. “The child is coming.” Luna knelt beside her. “We’ll protect you.” Aria gripped her hand. “Protect them.” The Hollowed arrived at dawn. Cloaked in ash, crowned in silence. Their marks were inverted, their eyes hollow. They didn’t speak. They simply moved. And the Grove responded.

What came through wasn't human. It had been, once. You could tell by the general shape and the way it moved on two legs. But everything else was weird. Its skin had turned gray and leathery, its fingers elongated into claws, and its face stretched into something with too many teeth. A Hollow. Class D anomaly that fed on fear. The crowd started cheering. The Hunter raised his sword. The Hollow circled him, making a clicking sound they made when they were hunting. I'd heard it before during deployments. It usually meant you were about to be attacked.

“Sister mine.” She points at Moira. The bone knife explodes. Splinters drive into Moira’s chest. She staggers, shock breaking through the burned mask. “You— you’re not—” “Hollow,” Wrath says from the doorway. He’s covered in black blood. Not his. One of the Others hangs limp in his grip. Its neck is bent wrong. “The Hollow are not dead, Alpha. They evolved.” He drops the body. It hits the floor and dissolves into gold light. The light flows toward Clay. Toward Love. Toward Cael.

The hollow whistle in her throat turned into a soft human sob. One by one the other Hollowed reached the top. They did not attack the warriors. They gathered around me a sea of silver ghosts seeking the sun. I felt Ronans hand on my shoulder his strength pouring into me to keep me from fainting as the Hollowed drained my energy. I was a living bridge, between the Moon and the abandoned. Kael whispered, "Look," and pointed to the center of the pit.

“Gods… Ragnor, that’s—” “The Hollow.” My voice came out as a low growl, steady despite the icy dread crawling up my spine. Valkyrie turned to me, her eyes searching mine for confirmation—for denial. But I had none to give. “No,” she whispered, shaking her head. “It can’t be.” It was. The Hollow was more than just a spirit. It was a force beyond this world, a parasite that didn’t just consume bodies—it devoured souls, leaving nothing but an empty, twisted husk behind. A fate worse than death.

The instant it hit the ground, it tried to bolt, moving fast. But Hayley was faster. She kicked it hard into the wall. Shing! Her blade stopped at its throat. The creature immediately began to beg. Only then did everyone get a clear look at it. It was a dwarf-like figure. Its entire body was unnaturally pale. It had white hair, fair skin, and white eyes. It wore white pants with a serial number printed on them. There wasn't a hint of color on it anywhere. "What is that? Some kind of mutant zombie?"

It phases, then re-forms, sliding behind me like a whisper. I pivot, my hands trembling. The Velen inside me screams. Something erupts from my chest. It's not a sound, but light. A ribbon of pale blue fire shoots out from my palms and pierces the thing’s core. The Hollow shrieks. It doesn’t bleed, but it flickers violently before dissolving into smoke. A gasp. I turn. Ezra is watching, blood dripping from his shoulder and his sword dragging beside him. He’s gritting his teeth, pale.

I closed my eyes and began to breathe through the pain, hoping that with just a few moments of rest I could continue this seemingly never-ending hallway. Once again, I found myself floating away, but this time when I landed in the hospital room I didn't panic. I looked out the window and saw that it was dark outside, darker than normal from what I could tell. When I got close, I could see that someone had turned off the outside lights. But even without it, the outlines and shadows of people mulling around outside were still visible. They didn't look like they were moving as Soul Eaters had been. Soul eaters, it was amazing how the idea of that didn't seem so ridiculous or alarming now.
