I cried out, terrified and in pain. She half shifted, something people generally avoided doing, pinning me down on the ground. “I'll kill you before you hurt my niece!” She snarled quietly at me. I could feel blood begin to trickle down my body as I heard the sound of a weapon being drawn. Instantly I felt a searing, burning pain on my chest right where my heart was. Whatever it was, surely a dagger based on the size, it was laced with wolfsbane. Wolfsbane was one of our biggest weaknesses. Wolfsbane was also something that could hinder healing. I screamed out in intense pain at the searing sensation, tears streaming down my face, blood down my body.

Hearing people's voices and actually seeing someone aside Katelyn renders an airy sensation to my skin. I narrow my eyes to shield it from daylight while I carefully place the torch near the old Blacksmith’s coven while he smiles at me, showing me his set of brown, chipped teeth before turning away at Lord Owen’s glare.

The corner of his lip tipped up into a devilish smirk. His ocean blue eyes watched me carefully. My body moved on its own, making me take small steps back towards the gate.

The necrotic toxin had mapped a network of purple-black agony across his torso, turning the lava metallic sweetness of his blood into sour rust. He shouldn’t have been able to stand. But he began to crawl. His charred, blistered fingers clawed at the obsidian floor, dragging his poisoned weight toward the Blood Gate. Each movement left a dark, steaming trail on the frost. “The gate... demands marrow,” Kael wheezed. His voice was a ruined vibration. He reached for the silver-alloy blade at his hip, his hand shaking so violently the metal sang against its sheath. “And I have... enough left... to pay the toll.”
