Lex perused the masquerade, feeling somewhat elated by the fact that he was indistinguishable. He adjusted his white and gold mask that covered his entire forehead but extended only to half of his face. The overall colour was white with an acrylic effect. The gold highlighted the eyelids and accentuated the mask.

Upon returning to the hospital, Lucy noticed Bianca at the front desk, enjoying a lively chat with the nurses. Bianca pulled several boxes of face masks from her handbag, handing them out to the nurses at the front desk. She then thanked them warmly, acknowledging their past assistance had been crucial to Melanie's turnaround. It was then that one of those nurses caught a glimpse of the masks in Bianca's handbag and asked with a puzzled expression, "What kind of face masks are those, Ms. Lane? Why do they look different than the ones you gave us?" Bianca smiled faintly, explaining, "It's just a healing recovery mask. I don't have flawless skin like you guys, so I need a little extra help."

Victor stood beside the first as Maria approached him with a velvet box. "Your mask," she said, opening it to reveal an intricately crafted piece. "Custom made, as you requested." Victor took it without comment, examining the half-mask of burnished gold and obsidian. It was crafted to resemble a death's head—not garish or Halloween-like, but subtle and elegant, with empty eyes that would reveal nothing of the man beneath. "Perfect," he finally said, his voice low. "Victor," Maria began, hesitating. "Are you sure about tonight? We could still—"

"You know how to use the scroll! Tell me what to do!" He paused, then slowly removed the mossy metal mask from his face. The sight stopped June’s breath. The man had no face—just a swirl of wind, green leaves, and white light. He was the ghost of the first Gardener. "To stop the Reaper, you must become the Scarecrow," he said, holding out the mask. "The mask can protect the garden. But once you put it on, you’ll never take it off. You’ll witness every death, every birth, every breath on this planet. You’ll be the guardian—but you’ll be alone in the light."

Inside, nestled on a velvet cushion, lay the Mask of Fortuna. My breath hitched in my throat as I gazed upon it. The mask was an eerie thing of beauty, crafted from polished obsidian that gleamed under the dim light, its surface sleek and reflective. It was as if it had been pulled straight from the depths of some ancient world. Crimson rubies and emerald sapphires adorned it, set delicately in gold filigree, their fiery hues sparkling as I leaned closer. The intricate Roman symbols etched along its edges seemed to pulse with some forgotten power—laurel wreaths and the ever-turning wheel of Fortuna, as if the mask itself held the whims of fate in its design.

All of it traced back to this woman. Selene’s eyes flicked toward the shattered windows, then she smiled again and clapped once. The sound echoed unnaturally. A second later, the glass exploded inward. Figures cloaked in black dropped into the summit hall. Dozens of them. Their armor was etched with silver runes and their faces hidden behind bone-white masks. The chamber recoiled. Even Lucian’s expression sharpened with something close to alarm. “No,” he said. Aurelia frowned. Then the lead figure stepped forward and removed his mask. His face was scarred, his eyes dead and merciless. When he spoke, his voice carried the weight of ancient death.

I prefer the pale lilac one. She considered this. ‘In that case, let’s go with the lilac.’ Mrs Reynolds interjected, ‘Come on! The gold mask with your black gown would be a perfect match.’ I said, calmly, ‘Black with gold – well, it’s not young people’s taste, is it? A bit naff, frankly.’ The woman pointed emphatically at the lilac mask. ‘This one, please.’ Mrs Reynolds scowled at me behind the woman’s back, then, grudgingly, picked up the lilac mask and helped the woman on with it. She handed over a mirror.

“Alpha Kael is going to have a heart attack.” I roll my eyes, if the Alpha had a heart attack after seeing me, the Elders would definitely have my head. “I don’t care what he thinks,” I say honestly, i preferred life better when he didn't even notice me. She only arches a brow and hands me the mask. It's delicate, white with silver embellishments, feathers arching off one side, and tiny gems scattered like stars across it. The moment I place it over my face, I feel like someone else. Someone braver.

Octavia killing ten children to steal a bond that was never hers. I thought about the girl who'd walked barefoot out of a gathering in a blue dress and I didn't recognize her anymore. She was a ghost from another life and the woman standing in this clearing with blood under her fingernails and a wolf in her chest and a mask in her hands was someone else entirely. I lifted the mask and pressed it to my face and the wood was warm against my skin and it fit like it had been carved for me and the smell of smoke and ash filled my nose and my own scent disappeared.
