And I’m sorry.” Before Harper could turn around, she already had a blindfold tied around her eyes. She squirmed and struggled, fighting to take it off. But her number one weakness had come to bite her in the ass. Clumsiness. She swayed, stumbling back and forth to remove something as simple as a blindfold, tripping over herself and fuming endlessly. All she could think about was the fact that he knew about this weakness of hers.

He crossed the distance in two strides, scooped Vivienne off the floor and into his arms. He checked her arm, his eyes full of concern. He never once looked at me. He stepped right over my body lying in a pool of blood. He carried Vivienne toward the door. "You'd better pray she's alright." The door slammed shut. Years of forced Power Transfers had gutted my wolf. I'd lost the healing ability every werewolf was born with. The pain dragged me under. My vision went black at the edges. Before I lost consciousness completely, I fumbled the phone from my pocket.

I keep going until the document is nothing but a handful of white scraps. I open my fingers. The white pieces flutter down to the marble floor. They land on Marcella’s damp skirt. I thought if I bled enough for your people, you would finally see me as a human being.”

Even though he lost some blood and even though his temples were bulging with veins, he was still concentrating and did not even let the platform waver. Anxiety hit Harriet hard. Just then, I heard the sound of heels outside the door, along with the tap of a cane against the floor. Evelyn was back. I instinctively hid the form behind me, slipping it into the gap in the couch. The door opened to Evelyn stepping in. She carefully felt her way forward while holding her cane. Her acting was terrible. She didn't look anything like a blind person. How did I ever believe her so completely? It was probably because I loved Evelyn. Love made one blind. And it turned out I was the one who had been blind all along. Evelyn didn't notice anything off about me. She felt her way over to the couch and wrapped her arms around my waist.

I went back to my desk. Sat down. Pressed both hands flat on the surface. My phone buzzed immediately. Daniel. How are you. Fine, I typed. Noah. What. I talked to him last night. I sat up. He called you, I typed. Midnight, Daniel said. He said I reconsidered and I stopped and I need to see him. A pause. Noah he stopped because he wants to see your face. Do you understand what that means for a man who has been blind for three years.

I pulled back against his hand, reached for the fabric covering my eyes. Strong fingers imprisoned my wrist, stopping me gently but firmly. “No. Not yet. Not for a while, I think.” “What? What do you mean, not for a while?” I jerked my hand free, turned to where I thought he was standing. “I mean that I’ll remove the blindfold when I’m ready to do so. I am not yet ready for you to see me. You have four other senses, Kyrie. Focus on those.” “Are you, like, ugly or disfigured or something?”
