The silence hit us like a physical blow. With all the side tables and chairs over the other, Arabella successfully reached the fire sensor. With the candle already lit, she raised it to the sensor, and just a flip of a second, the fire alarm of the whole building resonated.

She looked around for the source. The intercom by the bed had a small red light blinking. As she watched, a voice crackled through: "Hope you're finding everything satisfactory." Dimitri. Of course they were monitoring her. She walked to the intercom but didn't press the button to reply. Just stood there, arms crossed, staring at it. "I can see you," the voice continued. My skin buzzed, heat prickling against it. Out of nowhere, I saw a tall figure smiling at me. “Do you see that?” I whispered, voice shaking. ‘See what?’ Sai sounded distant now, muffled. “Someone,” I said hoarsely. “He’s just standing there—” The lamp flared one last time, a bright flash that swallowed the whole room in white. I screamed but no sound came out of my mouth. When my eyes adjusted, the smoke alarm was wailing. “No. No, no, no.”

She dozed off. Luna turned in her sleep, beads of sweat rolling down her face and chin. She coughed, her eyes squeezing shut. Soon she was coughing rapidly. Loud sounds seemed to penetrate her sleep from far away. Her eyes flew open. She sprang up immediately, coughing loudly, her eyes blinded with smoke. The smoke detector was going off and several knocks and shouts came from outside her door. She raced blindly for the door, barging out into the waiting arms of concerned neighbors.
