GIANNA The smoke detector screams at 11:47 PM. I drop my brush, grab my phone, and rush into the kitchen. I've been in the studio for at least six hours working on an abstract, painting flames and water colliding on a canvas too big for the easel and for a second I think I've imagined the sound. But the alarm keeps screaming, and that’s when I smell it. The smoke, grey and acrid, rolling from the east wing kitchenette at the end of the service corridor.

"Let them feel they had the upper hand, that I was the student. It worked like a charm. Broke the ice and I picked up a practical skill too." "Huh." He nods. "Smart." "Don't get too excited. I haven't fixed it yet." But as if the universe wants to contradict me, a little yellow light on the radio starts blinking. "What's that mean?" He points, leaning closer. "It's good, right?" "It's progress." I indicate the circuit board. "Now I can test the wiring, find where the fault is. Yellow means there's power at least." He nods, watching intently. "Green is the goal. Green light means we can transmit a call for help."

" Zac asked. "I found two of those devices when I was locked in a room with the dog chained in front of me. Then, with the help of those devices, I came out of that room. Those devices not only help you to find someone's location, but if you stamp on it, even by mistake or crush it with your hands, then a green coloured smoke comes out from it, which can make you unconscious," Liam spoke with a hushed voice to Carlo and Zac. Hearing that, the complexion on Carlo's face turned white, as he muttered, "Holy Mary!"

The side he slept on is cool to the touch, meaning that he’s been away for a while. The incessant buzz of the smoke detector goes off and I jump out of bed. When I get to the landing, Liam’s already waiting there, a frightened look in his eye. We run downstairs but can’t see Jacob. Sensing that the smell is coming from the kitchen, we go there. Standing in the middle of the room is Jacob, dripping from head to toe in water from the sprinklers. “What’s happening?” I shout above the sound of the detector. Before he can answer, his phone rings. The fire marshal appears out of nowhere and puts an end to the nerve-wracking detector sound.

Until a strange smell made me frown. Smoke. The kitchen. Shit, the popcorn! I pulled the pan off the heat, and as I lifted the lid, another wave of smoke poured into the air. Then, a deafening beep pierced my ears. Beep. Beep. Beep. A red light blinked on the ceiling. The fire alarm. “No, no, no, no!” I yelled, waving my hands as if that would magically make the smoke go away. I ran to open all the windows and the apartment door, trying to ventilate the disaster. But the alarm kept screaming like the building was about to explode.

Two hours later, when Jeremy entered the house as if it was his own, with Leah in his arms, and Moonlight in Leah's arms, the scene that greeted him, made him stop dead on his tracks, mouth slightly opened in shock. "What the..." Both father and son were yelling at each other and at a black pot that was smoking like it was a volcano. The smoke had filled the entire kitchen, triggering the fire detector that was making a deafening noise. Maybe it was because the fire detector was older than Mathew or maybe it just was unable to deal with these two idiots' bullshit, but the alarm sounded like it was dying from depression. I take it from him and access the shiny metal. “Interesting colour. Thank you.” I fiddle with the lighter and turn to Jay. “Do you know if there’s a smoke detector in here?” Jay takes one look at the lighter in my hand and shakes his head rapidly, probably catching on to my intentions. “Miss Amani, what do you intend to do with that thing?” I roll my eyes. “Answer the question, Jay.” He heaves a frustrated sigh. “No, there’s no smoke detector, but…” I slash my left and through the air, cutting him off.

I knew that if I did, my vision would turn hazy out of fear, and I would end up falling, probably to my death. Deep breaths escaped my lips as I managed to focus on the smoke detector. I wasted no time twisting it to the left, and when it was open, the sight of several wires greeted me, but what I did not miss was the blinking red dot, which was hidden deep inside. “The camera.” I whispered under my breath, my fingers instantly grabbing it. In my palm now lay an extremely small device which I knew for sure was the camera. I screwed the smoke detector back on and got down from the table.

EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY.” Elena choked on a cough, still waving the towel like a lunatic.
