I walked to him slowly, step by step, until I was face to face with him, his feet dangling, blood dribbling down his chin.
“You wanted a sacrifice?” I whispered. “Here.” And I drove the blade deeper with my mind, twisting it until his body split down the center.
The altar was sprayed in red. The chains around Ember snapped, one by one, as my magic unwound them like silk. She collapsed into my arms. She was weak, bones trembling, skin cold, but she was alive. Still burning under the surface. I held her close, burying my face in her hair, breathing her in.
