He's your alpha and not the enemy,” I said with as much calmness as I could muster, even as I was going crazy, trying to make sense of the situation.

I hated that he noticed. He chuckled low. “Good. ’Cause there’s blood coming, brother. You either pick up your cut or get cut out.” I turned to him then, eyes cold. “You ever think maybe blood isn’t the answer?” He leaned in close, voice a whisper meant to sting. “This is the club, Ash. Blood’s always the answer here.” Before I could reply, Griff’s office door slammed open and he stepped out with fire in his eyes and a paper clutched in his hand.

My body dissolved into drifting silver light. "Lyla! My daughter!" my father cried, reaching desperately forward. The light slipped through his fingers. Caleb lunged toward it, grasping at empty air. Nothing remained. Only a necklace fell from the ashes with a soft clatter against the stone. The string of beast fangs lay exposed on the pale altar, looking rough and out of place. My father kneeled and reached toward it. The moment his fingers touched the necklace, he jerked his hand back as if burned.

However, the fear still made my blood run cold. Soon, a red dot appeared on my body. I ran for my life, but no matter where I went, the red dot followed me, locked onto me like I was prey. Eventually, I couldn’t run anymore, so I stopped, gasping for breath. Just then, someone covered my mouth from behind. A sharp, suffocating smell filled my nose before everything went black. When I woke up again, I was lying on a dining table. My body was arranged with slices of ceviche, like some kind of grotesque work of art. From my fingers to my toes, they were all carefully plated.

He then helps Ellie to her feet. "Now tell me, how did this happen?" Lochness questions. "Valdis betrayed the horde by allying with the elder dragon Sixten.
