Hundred-dollar bills. He pulled out several stacks and shoved them into my hands. The paper felt cool and heavy. “Payment,” he said. His voice was flat. “I hate owing anyone.” Then he turned and left. Just like that. The door clicked shut behind him. Blood from his hand left a small trail on the floor. I stood there alone in the dim library light. The stacks of money felt too heavy in my arms. My burns throbbed. My heart raced. Tears burned my eyes again. I took a deep breath, staring at the stack of money.

Something real in this carnival of lies. After splashing my face with cold water, I walk numbly back to the bedroom. I retrieve my phone from where I dropped it, and check my bank account. The screen blurs as I stare at the numbers. The money sits there, mocking me. Blood money. Payment from my father's killer for the privilege of using my body to create new life.
