He stumbled backward, clutching his hand as smoke rose from where my tear had touched his skin. Air rushed into my lungs. I gasped, choking, my body convulsing as oxygen flooded back. My vision cleared slowly, the black spots receding. I pushed myself up on trembling arms, still coughing, still struggling to breathe properly. Across from me, Rye stared at his hand in shock and pain. The skin where my tear had landed was blackened, blistered, smoking.

I screamed and grabbed his shoulders, watching blood tickle out of his nose and mouth. Bitter tears streamed down my face and I screamed in agony.
