"Get behind me!" ​The hound squeezed through the door, followed by two more. They were the size of horses, their bodies shifting and blurring like smoke in the wind. One lunged. Kael caught it on his shield, the force of the impact sending him skidding back. He sliced through the creature’s neck, but it didn't bleed—it simply reformed a second later. ​"You can't kill them while the field is up!" Kael shouted over the roars. "Seraphina, the anchor! You have to use your own blood! The Bloodbound mark can bypass the ward!"

Placing her other books on the floor, Layla pulled the leather-bound book from its home amongst the others and opened it. As her eyes skimmed the pages, she caught a couple of words; SHADOW STALKERS, BLOODSUCKER, PHANTOMS.

As soon as I exited the shower, more coughs sounded in my small washroom. Was I sick? Did Libby infect me? Was that possible? While I wasn’t confident in all my knowledge of werewolves, it had seemed I’d previously been immune to sickness and illness. Even Lucy had said as much two days earlier. But coughing now, my lungs heavy, and snot beginning to run from my nose, I couldn’t imagine what else it could be.

Neither wolf nor vampire, but something that is between doors." I read out loud.

Kaelen had heard that story before; it was taught in royal history, and it happened in the forest they visited that night. “They cursed our bloodline with their dying magic,” Darius continued. “A curse designed to destroy the Alpha line.” Kaelen shook his head. “That’s just a legend." “I believed the same thing,” Darius said quietly. “Until tonight.” He lifted his hand weakly. Dark veins pulsed beneath his skin. “The moment you left for the hunt… the sickness began.” Kaelen felt Ravok shift uneasily inside him. The forest, the wolf murmured.
