The Beta's Daughter
When I squinted against the sunlight, I could just make out the forms of a cluster of people stood by the edge of the forest.
I jogged closer, and was relieved to see that at the front of the group was Phoenix, the leader of the Salmon tribe. They were striking, with long, braided hair that hung well down their back. Their eyes were wide, and a glossy, deep, dark blue, that looked mystical; as though Phoenix was always thinking of something mysterious, and far too intellectual for anyone else to understand.
I’d met Phoenix a handful of times, and they had always been ineffably kind to me. Once, they’d explained their gender to me, with great pride in their identity.
