Folding my arms over my chest, I pressed my lips together and turned my glare on her. "Are you a friend of Chase's?" She was clearly claiming him because even as she asked the question, she slipped her fingers between the buttons on his shirt so that she could touch his skin. She looked me up and down like I was trash, so I rolled my eyes at her before they landed on her wayward fingers.

The light of the lamp on his desk juxtaposes the reflection of light on his face. Half of his face is covered in shadow and the other is visible in the light. You can’t unjustly accuse us!” I did not engage in a meaningless argument with her. I fight harder and try to scream as panic bubbles in my chest but the hands on my body are brutal, and the force of the cloth around my mouth makes it hard to breathe. Before I lose my grip on my consciousness, I see my parent’s blurred faces, as the van zooms past the Cafe, and leaves them behind. I know. The sound is sharp and clear and the room does not go quiet, rooms don't go quiet at parties, but the immediate circle of people around us does, that ripple of sudden attention that radiates out from a single point. Chase's head has turned with the impact. He stays very still for a moment, looking away from me. Then he turns back, slowly, and his expression is the one from the mirror photographs, the cold settled thing, except that underneath it, very briefly, is something that looks like satisfaction. I realize, in the three seconds before the cameras confirm it, that I have just given him exactly what he wanted. He raises his glass. "There she is," he says quietly. The flashbulbs go off.
