“Do you think it’s haunted?” My breath sticks in my chest at her words. Before I can say anything, Jack laughs. “Don’t be stupid. Of course it isn’t haunted.” “Some people think it is,” I counter. “There have always been stories about this place, about the swamp.” The woman pauses as an uneasy shadow flickers across her delicate features. “What kind of stories?” she presses. Jack once again cuts me off. “Who gives a shit?” he chuckles. “Ghosts, witches, werewolves–that’s all kid stuff. The only thing we should be afraid of is the IRS.”

She found it funny to tell me horror stories before bed. I remembered once returning the favor. I told her about Terry the ghost, a boy who’d died in an accident on the street across from our house. Terry’s ghost wandered our neighbor’s house where his family had once lived. Mom hadn’t slept alone for weeks after that, and she never told me another horror story. My mom was like me in some ways—she was terrified of the paranormal, or anything religious. That’s why her engagement to Bill had been such a shock. But even Mom had gotten braver, so why couldn’t I?

, I screamed. "What??!", I heard dad ask from behind me. I quickly turned to see he was with mum. I sighed a bit in relieve. "We can't stay here..", I started repacking the boxes. "Let's go home..", I was almost pleading. I didn't want to wait and find out what goes on after midnight! Dad laughed a bit before walking up to par my back. I also read that they were the authors of mischief, they don't reproduce and they die by getting pierced by sharp objects or by getting exposed to the sunlight. He is a douchebag but can he pull such a stunt just to scare me? One thing I learned from the horror movies I watch is never to scream and run so I backed away and tried to be in the shade because the moon was up and bright. I don't want to be spotted or watched by who may or may not be my predator.

, Clinton chipped in with a crazy chuckle. “Wow! Bring it on, I love scary stories. My favorites movies are horror movies”, Enola said with certain level of boldness. The guys were already challenged because they can’t object at that moment owing to the one fact that a girl was already bold. They wouldn’t want to be the weak ones. “Please don’t make it too scary…. I want to sleep well this night”, Ella warned. With her warning, it was obvious that everyone of them wanted to hear the story, no matter how scary it looked.

I fell asleep towards the end. "You said you weren't scared?" Camila argues. "You said it was a boring movie. You slept." I chuckle. "Well, I lied. I only put on a brave face." "That must have been a scary movie. You must've been scared, Lippy," Hearing says my nickname makes my body feel sick. Leah peeks her way through my conversation with Camila. "But you must know scary movies are just make-believe stories. There is no such thing as Freddy Kruger or Jason. It's okay to be scared; as adults, we see those movies as not real. Even children can tell the difference between fiction and non-fiction."

I darted my eyes away quickly-- "You promised," Al said all of a sudden. "What?" I paused in surprise. "No question asked," Al smirked, holding out his hand to me. I was grateful that he didn't ask into it. Night fell. So the thing about horror stories is that-- The fear kicks in only at dark nights when you are alone, not when you are at the crowded theater or on the bright street. Meaning-- I couldn't fall asleep that night. Turns out it's a bit hard to fall asleep when you don't close your eyes because you feel the need to stare at everything with alert.
