“But no. I suppose not.” “Well,” Grace sighs. “It really isn’t my place to tell you, but if you are going to rescue her you need to know. What do you know of the covens?” “That there are three,” I respond, proud that I know that much. Grace lets out a sigh of exasperation. She places her knitting on the table beside her and heaves a large book off of the bookshelf in the corner. “Come. Sit,” she says as she sits down at the little kitchen table. Flipping through the book she finds the story that she is looking for. “Read,” she points to the book, and I look at her in disbelief.

I let this happen. I moved my back towards the window and walked over to an old wooden desk in the large healing room. Aunt Belle had left a book there, something which she said would assist me in making some sense of all of everything going on. The title, larger than the rest of the text, read: “The History of Supernatural Covens.” I had not for a moment agreed to read the book because anticipation was scary especially when it came to witches and curses from ancient days. Yet if I had to do this to save Zoey it was about time that I came face to face with my fears.

My fingers glide over the front cover of a book, 'History of Witches,’ I read out loud. I open the book and peer down at a list of names with birth dates and town of birth. I flick through the pages until the last name on the list starts to glow, 'Anna Glint. Healer’s Coven,’ I read. A sudden breeze makes me turn and face the red velvet curtain.

I strolled through the library, enjoying the soft rustle of pages and the familiar scent of old paper. When I entered the history section, my fingers brushed over the spines until two words leaped out at me: Capris Coven. I stopped in my tracks and smiled. "Why hadn’t I thought of this before?" I mused. Alpha Sebastian's pack owned the oldest and largest library in our realm; surely they had records about Capris Coven.

Which was why I'd been in this library since before the sun came up. The text I was working through now was older than most of what I'd already covered, a coven record from three generations back, handwritten in the cramped and slightly irregular script of someone who'd been documenting as they worked rather than transcribing from memory. It covered dissolution compounds mostly, ways of breaking or interrupting magical workings through chemical means rather than direct counterspell. It was technical and dry and I'd been reading it for two hours without finding anything that applied cleanly to what I needed. And then I turned the page.

The four of us gathered around the desk. “This is it. I found it in your father’s private library,” Della said. She set the book down with care, as if presenting an artifact to a council. She turned the yellowed, brittle pages until she found the passage she wanted. Her finger paused near the middle; the ink was faded but still legible. "There was one coven once. Six witches led it, the strongest of their kind, and they kept the whole craft in balance. Originally, the coven and the packs shared no bad blood. We coexisted harmoniously for years.”

But cross her, hurt someone she loves, and the toy poodle turns into Cerberus. “I’m going shopping later today,” she says, coming back behind the counter and pulling a notebook out of the drawer under the register so she can start making a list. “Shopping” is code for she’s traveling to another coven to purchase magical supplies. “Do you need anything?” “Black salt and mandrake root,” I tell her quietly, eyeing the couple who went right to the romance section. We’re the only independent bookstore in the area, and after the last big chain retailer went out of business, things really picked up for us.

“Then we wouldn’t have to hide.” Then the three women saw Bohdan, Isaac and Rancid walk out of the saloon and head their way. Cara waved at them and got their attention. As Bohdan approached, he looked over at the gathering and asked, “What the fuck is that?” “They’re burning vampires tonight,” Cara replied. “Do you want to stay and watch?” “I don’t think that would be a good idea. Small towns like these have crazy ideas. They might take one look at us and decided to burn us as well.”

The next day, Caitlin and Kathryn went back to Creeksville on their mother’s order to find the girl’s family and see what the people are up to and while Kathryn won’t stop talking, Caitlin’s mind drifted back to the two priests she saw yesterday and what she overheard. The priest, Aiden, had referred to them as demons taking the form of humans and he had said they will be responsible for the end of the world. It was not as if it has never crossed her mind about the dangers lurking because of the other Covens, especially the Lifeblood Coven that is ruled by Aamon.
