I just wish she'd realize that. Besides, I doubt she'd find anything that she could actually blackmail me with. Well, except for the maternity books I got when she just moved in here—about a thousand dollars worth of them. I knew nothing about pregnancy then, and reading those books helped me see through her difficulty. We wouldn't have gotten this far if I hadn't read them. Eventually, I stopped reading them for the knowledge, but rather... entertainment. I learned some fascinating things about female anatomy, the most interesting being how wide the vagina expands during birth.

Some may not want to find such things mentioned in books especially when we use the books we read as a means of escape. But, if you haven't forgotten, I made mention that Noor had a traumatic past and this is barely scraping the surface. All women deserve to be respected, we deserve to be cherished, we deserve to be seen as more than just our bodies, we are humans, we are more!!! And we deserve better.

The apartment fell quiet. Rita stayed on the sofa for another minute, then pushed herself up. She opened the larger suitcase first and began unpacking. Clothes went into the closet. Toiletries lined the bathroom shelf. Books found a place on the low shelf near the window. She worked steadily, keeping her hands busy so her mind would stay quieter. One box remained. She set it on the coffee table and opened the lid. Inside sat several small glass containers filled with dried herbs and seeds. Beside them lay a worn notebook bound in faded leather.

AURORA I couldn't stop reading. Every time I told myself to put the phone down, every time I swore I was done, my thumb kept scrolling. Another article. Another headline. Another comment from someone who has never met me but knew exactly what kind of woman I was. How stupid! Who had written herself down. Who had put her name on it. She thought about the woman at four in the morning who had not been able to put the book down. About the woman who had called her sister. About the woman who had called the lawyer. About the hundreds of women who had written today and the thousands who would write in the weeks and months to come as the book found its way to the people who needed it.

CHAPTER 20 SOPHIA I wasn't expecting any email. It came quite late,just when I was about to shut down my laptop for the night. It read: Feature Invitation: Global Woman Magazine. I blinked. Of course,I've heard of them. The leading global publication for empowering women,sharing stories of how they rose to the top,personal growth and high-profile interviews. I'd read the stories they shared about activists,CEOs,people who thrive in different walks of life and women who have been through fire and storm and came out glowing.

“When you had those hard days, she withdrew. She closed her heart. You were the one holding the pieces together. All of it.” I wanted to speak, to defend Eunice, but I couldn’t find the words. Maybe I was tired. Maybe part of me didn’t fully disagree. “You need a woman who will stand by you,” she said again, now slowing her steps. “In love, yes. But also in business. In decisions. In family matters. Someone who sees where you’re going and says, ‘I’ll walk with you.’ Not someone who always walks away.” She paused and looked at me, her eyes softer now. “You may not like what I’m saying, but one day you’ll thank me.”

But neither did I retreat. "I'm just saying," I muttered instead, not in the mood to argue with him. I pushed past him, "if she's half as deadly as she's classy, we're all fucked. "And if you mess this up," he bellowed after me, "you'll be the one to ruin the last hope this company has." I didn't answer him. But I knew what I saw in that woman's eyes, and it wasn't just “intelligence”. It was a calculating edge. And something colder.
