AURORA I couldn't stop reading. Every time I told myself to put the phone down, every time I swore I was done, my thumb kept scrolling. Another article. Another headline. Who had written herself down. Who had put her name on it. She thought about the woman at four in the morning who had not been able to put the book down. About the woman who had called her sister. About the woman who had called the lawyer. About the hundreds of women who had written today and the thousands who would write in the weeks and months to come as the book found its way to the people who needed it.

CHAPTER 20 SOPHIA I wasn't expecting any email. It came quite late,just when I was about to shut down my laptop for the night. It read: Feature Invitation: Global Woman Magazine. I blinked. Of course,I've heard of them. The leading global publication for empowering women,sharing stories of how they rose to the top,personal growth and high-profile interviews. I'd read the stories they shared about activists,CEOs,people who thrive in different walks of life and women who have been through fire and storm and came out glowing.

“When you had those hard days, she withdrew. She closed her heart. You were the one holding the pieces together. All of it.” I wanted to speak, to defend Eunice, but I couldn’t find the words. Maybe I was tired. Maybe part of me didn’t fully disagree. “You need a woman who will stand by you,” she said again, now slowing her steps. “In love, yes. But also in business. In decisions. In family matters. Someone who sees where you’re going and says, ‘I’ll walk with you.’ Not someone who always walks away.” She paused and looked at me, her eyes softer now. “You may not like what I’m saying, but one day you’ll thank me.”

But neither did I retreat. "I'm just saying," I muttered instead, not in the mood to argue with him. I pushed past him, "if she's half as deadly as she's classy, we're all fucked. "And if you mess this up," he bellowed after me, "you'll be the one to ruin the last hope this company has." I didn't answer him. But I knew what I saw in that woman's eyes, and it wasn't just “intelligence”. It was a calculating edge. And something colder.

“What are these?” “They’re romance novels.” “They’re p**n, Nala. I’ve been alive long enough to know the difference.” She didn’t deny it. Instead, she just stood there with her arms crossed, waiting. I studied her face. In all the centuries I’d known this woman, I’d never once seen her read anything that wasn’t academic. Science journals and historical texts and research papers dry enough to cure insomnia. She had entire shelves dedicated to old human civilizations and herbal remedies and subjects so boring I fell asleep just looking at the spines.

“I'm sorry.” “No, you're not,” she said, her stare was already pressing down on me. Because annoyingly, she was somehow right. “She actually spent almost half of her day here,” the woman added. “Doing what exactly?” She stared at me again, as if thinking whether to keep this conversation going or not. “Reading of course, what else?” “What was she basically reading about?” “Almost everything,” she gestured towards the space in the bookstore. That was when my eyes drifted towards them. Almost all the book covers were about wolves and leaders. But there wasn't any picture on them, just words.

“He told me I wasn’t good, but when I asked how to get better, he said it wasn’t his job to teach me.” Fuck, the guy was a total prick. If I’d known, I never would have let him in our house. “Mia, believe me—you’re not the problem. Jake was. Every guy loves a woman’s touch like that.” She blinked up at me, uncertainty filling her eyes. “What if he’s right, though? What if my next boyfriend leaves me for the same reason?” I grimaced and ran a hand down my face. Days like this made me wish her mother was still here. “Baby, the only thing I can tell you is that if a man doesn’t enjoy a woman’s mouth on him… it’s probably not the woman.”

We just kept existing in the same space and let whatever was happening happen at whatever pace it decided to happen at. It was the most uncontrolled thing I had done in years. I was surprised to find I did not hate it. Monday he left a book on the kitchen counter. Not a note with it. Just the book. A biography of a woman who had built one of the first female led law firms in New York in the nineteen sixties. I had mentioned her once in a conversation two weeks ago. One sentence. I had not thought he was paying that level of attention. I took it to my room and read fifty pages before I went to sleep.
