And once I found it, wounded and weak, its eyes already changing colours and life almost draining out of it, my heart had clenched. And so I crouched low to its level, brushed my fingers over it and with much gentleness, I carried it to my hands like it were some child before I walked over to a low pavement I could climb. I hadn’t thought much of it when she chose it. Now I wonder if children instinctively gravitate toward truths adults try to avoid. I begin reading, my voice calm, warm, steady.

My hand subconsciously moved to my stomach. I opened the first page carefully and began to read. The story was simple, but beautifully written with soft and gentle words in a way that not only children, but even adults, could fall in love with it. Not only that, it was filled with really beautiful illustrations that made me smile. I couldn’t help but imagine my little one in my arms while I hugged the baby just like Mama Bear hugged her precious little cub. “Let’s go home and read this together,” I murmured happily.
