Else Heidi would have made his night hellishly uncomfortable. Grabbing Rory by the wrist, he moved him behind multiple bookshelves. It was in this moment Nicholas was grateful for his late wife’s excessive love of reading. The lineup of six arranged shelves that were stacked to the brim with books should be enough to keep Rory hidden until Nicholas was done with Heidi. Grabbing him by the jaw, he gave it a tight squeeze. “Not a sound from you, till she leaves… Got it?” These blue eyes lingered till he got a nod and, at the same time, a knock at the door.

He's moving in to verify. I didn’t reply, Damien could handle it without my input, but I stood by the phone anyway, waiting for the next update. Minutes dragged, then another message. When my shift ended, I found myself walking toward the corner table where Kael sat, his laptop closed now, a book in his hands. I stopped short when I saw the cover. ‘Knot We Cannot Untie.’ That was the book he was holding. I can't believe that Kael would be reading one of Linda Lively’s books. “You read… this?” I said, the surprise evidently in my voice. Kael looked up, one brow raised. “Why? You think I only read racing magazines and bank statements?” I gave a small laugh. “Chill bro. It’s just… not what I was expecting ”

Maren was looking at the walls. They were covered. Floor to the low ceiling, every flat stone, hung with cord. Knotwork. Not decoration, I knew that the second I saw it. These were tied with intent. Loops inside loops, hitches I didn't have names for, some of them small as a fingernail and some the size of a wheel, and all of it in an order, a grammar, going somewhere along the wall. I tie knots. I've tied knots my whole life. I looked at that wall and felt like a child who knows her letters watching someone read.
